In a number of areas like phonetics, laboratory phonology, speech technology, psycholinguistics, applied speech research, socio-phonetics, speaker identification (forensic phonetics) or speech-based medical diagnostics, most examinations can only be done on the basis of a large amount of speech material meeting the criteria of database technology.
